Chaga mushroom extract suppresses oral cancer

Chaga mushrooms (Inonotus obliquus) have been widely studied for their anti-tumor effects on many types of cancers (lung, liver, breast, colorectal). A recent study confirms Chaga mushroom extracts suppress oral cancer as well.

The study, supported by the National Research Foundation, suggests Chaga mushroom extracts are a promising natural supplement for the treatment of oral cancer. While the exact mechanism requires more research, the study indicates Chaga mushroom extract slows oral cancer cell growth by suppressing the cancer cell’s energy metabolism.

Several studies have shown the antitumor effects of Chaga mushrooms against various cancers, including lung adenocarcinoma, breast cancer, liver carcinoma, and colorectal cancer6,7,10,31. Chaga mushroom extract inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells by inducing autophagy processes6. Chaga mushroom constituents exhibit cytotoxic and proapoptotic activities in human lung cancer cells7. In addition, Chaga mushroom-derived ergosterol peroxide suppresses proliferation of colorectal cancer cells through down-regulation of β-catenin signaling10. Similarly, we demonstrated that Chaga mushroom extract decreases the proliferation of oral cancer cells by modulating cancer energy metabolism and autophagy. Furthermore, we have shown the anti-tumor effect of this extract in oral cancer cells through regulation of several cell signal pathways, including AMPK, STAT3, p38 MAPK, and NF-κB. This study, for the first time, found that Chaga mushroom extract suppresses oral cancer cell progression by inhibiting glycolysis and mitochondrial membrane potential.

Mature mushrooms vs mycelium: A 2024 up-dated summary of scientific findings outlines Chaga’s notable anticancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulating properties. The summary suggests extracted compounds from fully mature Chaga mushrooms have more direct impact on cancer than compounds from Chaga mycelium.

While polysaccharides from Chaga mycelium work by triggering the immune system, those from Chaga sclerotium directly block protein synthesis in malignant cells. These extracts and extracted compounds have shown to be non-toxic and have been used as possible cancer-preventive and chemotherapy substitutes. Endopolysaccharides from the mycelium operate indirectly by stimulating the immune system, whereas heteropolysaccharides and homoglucans from the sterile conk have direct anticancer effects [92].

How to consume: Chaga mushrooms don’t look like most mushrooms. Mature Chaga mushrooms are sclerotium fungi that infect birch trees in a symbiotic relationship that forms large woody conks. While you can consume these with some effort, the best way to tap into Chaga mushroom’s nutritive and medicinal value is to use an extract like those used in scientific studies.

The Health Benefits of Lion’s Mane Mushrooms!

A wonderful article from the Cleveland Clinic outlines five health benefits of Lion’s Mane Mushrooms (hericium erinaceus). It’s kind of rare to find them fresh at a farmer’s market to eat raw, but you can also get them in a supplement form.

Definitely the cooler cousin in the fungi family (move over button and shitake), lion’s mane mushrooms (hericium erinaceus for the scientific set) have a long history in traditional Chinese medicine and in Native American healing practices. And because of the impressive benefits they may have to offer the mind and body, lion’s mane mushrooms have become increasingly popular.

“People are looking for alternatives for things before they go on medications,” says registered dietitian Beth Czerwony, RD, LD. “It’s in this holistic attitude that we find food is medicine.”

If you cannot find fresh Lion’s Mane to eat as a whole food, we suggest making sure the supplement you choose is from a brand you trust and made with 100% fully mature mushrooms, not quickly and cheaply grown mycelium on grain or other substrate. Some brands hide this cheaper method by using an image of the mature mushroom on their label while the ingredients clearly state the product you are consuming is powdered “mycelium” encapsulated with the growing substrates “rice” or “grain.”

Here are the highlighted health benefits of Lion’s Mane mushrooms from the article:

  1. Help support brain health
  2. Reduce inflammation and oxidative stress
  3. Protect your gut
  4. Support heart health
  5. Help fight cancer

We support accurate labeling of mushroom products

Two major mushroom product makers are at odds over what can be labeled as real mushroom products, and we have thoughts. NAMMEX wants the FDA to regulate the word “mushroom” in products to mean the full mature mushrooms depicted on their labels and in centuries of cultural use. Host Defense’s Paul Stamets wants his lab-grown mycelium to be labeled as the fully grown mushrooms depicted on his labels. As a mushroom extract maker who uses fully grown mature mushrooms, Half Hill Farm supports accurate labeling of mushroom products.

Recently, mushroom product maker NAMMEX filed a regulatory request with the FDA seeking clarity in mushroom supplements industry labeling.

At issue are major brands that make “mushroom” products from lab-grown sheets of mycelium cheaply propagated in a matter of days on rice or grain substrate. Once the substrate is myceliated, it is then dried, and extracted or encapsulated and labeled as made from the mature mushrooms often depicted on the label. These products unfortunately often contain the actual grain substrate in the product and are consumed by the purchaser. Some companies, like Host Defense, accurately include “rice” or “grain” in their ingredients because of this. Some don’t. Either way, the shorter and cheaper process certainly makes for more profit.

It is no surprise that some brands that make products from mycelium are upset with NAMMEX and have issued a statement opposing their effort. One statement, led by Host Defense’s Paul Stamets, argues that his company and other major brands should be able to label their mycelium products as “mushrooms” because mushrooms are made of the mycelium he uses to create his products. You can read his statement here.

At the same time this regulatory request for clarity is being made by a mushroom product maker, the poultry industry, in a bit of irony, won FDA approval allowing them to label lab-grown cultured cells as “chicken.” While science can definitively conclude a petri dish of cultured cells is indeed cultured from real chicken (just as mycologists can determine mycelium is cultured from real mushrooms), a plate of lab-grown cells is not the same as the real thing.

Here at Half Hill Farm, our mushroom extracts use the fully mature mushrooms pictured on our labels that take months to cultivate. Mature mushrooms experience months of growth and controlled conditions to produce the full spectrum of compounds that are extracted. The distinction between mushroom extracts and mycelium extracts set us apart from many major brands and is important to us.

Mushrooms have evolved to survive millions of years of changing conditions to be the oldest living thing on our planet. The result of that evolutionary outcome is eons of wisdom in the form of the full fruited body of the mushroom itself that we should respect and revere with proper labeling.

How to make sauerkraut – fermenting veggies

FERMENTING VEGGIES: This small haul from the Murfreesboro Saturday Market got made into some tasty sauerkrauts we hope will be ready late next month. These are recipes with ginger that we make at home for ourselves and decided to add to the krauts we currently offer at Wellness Emporium – Woodbury. One is Ginger Beet. The other is Carrot, Ginger, and Turmeric.

HOW TO MAKE SAUERKRAUT: Sauerkrauts are easy to make and so good for you. They are rich in dietary fiber, nutrients, andgut-healthy probiotics.

All you need to do is chop up a blend of 75% cabbage with 25% other veggies and 2% salt added. Weigh all your cabbage and mulitply the weight time 0.33. The resulting number is your 25% of other veggies. After chopping or shredding your ingredients, mix them together and weigh it. Multiply the total weight with 0.02. This is how much salt you need to add, which is 2% of the total weight.

Mix all these together kneading the veggies in a bowl. You should see brine dripping from each fist full. Let it sit for about 20 minutes, then place in a fermentation vessel for about three weeks making sure all the veggies are completely submerged in its own brine. You can use fermentation weights to hold your fermenting veggies below the brine surface, or fill ziplock bags with water and place on top.

Fermentation will go through a couple of phases. If you use an airlock or airtight lid, you will need to burp the ferments. This will take about 3 weeks. When it’s done, jar it up and refrigerate to slow or stop fermentation. It should be a crunchy, tangy, probiotic bite of fermented goodness you can add to most meals!

Lion’s Mane mushroom extract improves brain cell growth

A new study in the January 2023 Journal of Neurochemistry shows unique compounds in Lion’s Mane mushroom extract boost memory by boosting nerve growth.

The study identified two bioactive compounds, N-de phenylethyl isohericerin and Hericene A, that appear to regulate the growth of neurons that improve memory.

The extracts had a “clear neurotrophic effect,” they write, resulting in doubly long axons – the threadlike links that conduct impulses away from a neuron – and more than triple the number of neurites, or small projections from a neuron that can grow into fully functional axons or dendrites.

“Laboratory tests measured the neurotrophic effects of compounds isolated from Hericium erinaceus on cultured brain cells, and surprisingly we found that the active compounds promote neuron projections, extending and connecting to other neurons,” Meunier says.

Researchers describe the compounds present in Lion’s Mane mushrooms as potent memory enhancers that may provide hope for natural memory enhancement for an aging population. Read more from University of Queensland researchers.
